When you were working, your monthly expenses were manageable; now that you have retired, they have risen, especially with inflation, and you may need to move to a smaller home to cut down on housing expenses OR get a part-time job.

Every day, I’m involved in helping senior homeowners with home valuations, providing helpful resources, and helping them determine if it makes the most sense to stay in their current home or to consider downsizing. From my many years of experience, there are a few signs that you should consider before deciding whether or not it makes good sense to move.

Sign # 1 Your current monthly budget leaves little leftover cash for savings or having fun. The definition of retirement has changed. Americans are maintaining an active lifestyle. They see themselves traveling, experiencing new adventures, exercising, and enjoying lifelong learning—

#2. You’re falling behind on home maintenance. Sentimental memories of the good times can cause seniors to linger in their family homes far longer than is wise for their health or financial stability. Trips and falls are the number one causes of accidents for senior citizens. Especially falling down the steps in a two-story home.

# 3 Your home has features that no longer fit your lifestyle. Sometimes, your spacious home was filled with kids, pets, and entertaining guests. Now the TV room is dusty and never used. The bedrooms are closed off to save on the heating and cooling bills. The dining room is empty. Now that you're only using a handful of rooms, paying for rooms you don’t even use doesn't make sense. Other factors are shoveling snow from the driveway and maintaining the yard.

# 4 You’re the oldest resident in your neighborhood. Original neighbors have moved away. It was ideal when your kids were home, but now you feel isolated. Especially if you’ve lost your spouse.

# 5 The beauty of retirement is you no longer need to let your career dictate where you live. You can shop around for the ideal city, state, or neighborhood. Do you want a small town in the mountains or a condo in the city?
